A washer and dryer are two essential appliances in any home. They can make laundry day a breeze, but only if they are appropriately stored. This will save you time and money in the long run. There are times you may find the need to store your washer and dryer away. At MySpace Self Storage, our storage experts have some tips to get ready to store your units.
To clean a washer:
Start by running it on the hottest cycle with a cup of bleach.
Clean the outside of the washer with a solution of one part vinegar to one part water.
Wipe down the door gasket and inside the door with this solution.
For a dryer:
Start by vacuuming out the lint trap and exhaust duct.
Clean the lint screen with soapy water.
Wipe down the inside of the dryer drum with a damp cloth.
Drying your washer will prevent the growth of mold and mildew. To speed up the drying process, prop open the door of the washer and leave it in a well-ventilated area.
It includes the hose from the back of the washer, the power cord, and any extra hoses or cords. Store them in a plastic bag in the washer or dryer for safekeeping.
Each appliance is different, and there may be specific steps you need to take to ensure that your washer or dryer is disconnected correctly.
To disconnect a washer
Start by shutting off the water at the valve.
Disconnect the hoses from the back of the machine.
For a dryer,
Start by disconnecting it from the power source.
Vacuum around the area where you store the dryer to remove any lint that may have accumulated.
This will prevent them from opening during transport and damaging the interior of the appliances.
Be sure to secure the appliances to the dolly with straps or rope to keep them from falling off during transport.
Covering the washer/dryer prevents dust and dirt from accumulating on the appliances. You can use a tarp, sheet, or light blanket.
This will prevent mold and mildew from growing inside the appliances. If you're concerned about pests, you can place a piece of cheesecloth over the opening of the appliance to keep bugs out.
When storing a washer and dryer, choosing a dry, temperature-controlled space is crucial as it prevents appliance damage. With the fluctuations in temperature and humidity, a climate-controlled storage unit would be ideal.
